THE YEAR OF ADELE
It’s official: 2011 was the year of Adele. Not only did she rule the charts but she penetrated the epic center of pop culture. While she may have won the hearts of Europeans and Tumblrs years ago - it was this year she truly dominated the U.S. Let’s take a look:
By The Numbers
12 million+ albums sold globally of 21
5.6 million copies sold of ‘Rolling In The Deep’
4.67 million albums sold in the U.S.
13 weeks atop of the Billboard 200
12 combined weeks atop of the Billboard 100 (for ‘Rolling In The Deep’ and ‘Someone Like You’)
7 weeks atop of the Billboard 100 for ‘Rolling In The Deep’
6 nominations for the 2012 Grammy Awards (including Best Album, Record and Song)
3 awards at the MTV VMAs for ‘Rolling In The Deep’ (and one powerful performance)
And Everywhere Else
Adele was the first artist ever in United States to have the top selling album (21), single (‘Rolling In The Deep’) and music video (Live at Royal Albert Hall) in a single year.
Adele took the top of many ‘Best of’ lists including:
- Billboard - Artist of the Year
- Rolling Stone - Best Album of 2011
- Spin - Best Song of 2011
‘Someone Like You’ was the center of one of this season’s funniest SNL skits. (Who doesn’t need a good cry?)
‘Rumour Has It’ and ‘Someone Like You’ were mashed up for one of best (and most emotional) performances on Glee.
‘Rolling In The Deep’ spurred countless covers (John Legend) and remixes (Jamie XX and Voodoo Farm).
Adele was on the cover of Billboard (2X), British Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Elle Quebec, Entertainment Weekly, Out, Rolling Stone and more.
Adele was subject of nearly 1,000 (trackable) news stories in the U.S. alone, according to Nexis.
Adele took over her Twitter account and garnered 10,000+ followers for her charity of choice in less than a day.
Adele was turned into my favorite Social Network meme and product of one of my favorite animated GIFs.
What did I miss? What were your favorite Adele moments of 2011?
